SOUND THERAPY

What is sound therapy?

"Sound healing is the therapeutic application of sound frequencies to the body/mind of a person with the intention of bringing them into a state of harmony and health."
Simon Heather

Sound therapy, also referred to as sound healing, can be achieved through the use of instruments or the voice to release energetic blockages, inducing a state of ease and well-being in the body. While there are many types of sound therapy, all of them produce vibrations that alter your brain waves through the process of entrainment.

Brainwave entrainment is a process where external rhythmic stimuli - such as sound, light, or vibration - help synchronize the brain's naturally fluctuating waves by providing a consistent frequency for the brain to follow. This phenomenon occurs because the brain has a natural tendency to align itself with stable, repetitive patterns, allowing it to attune to the external stimulus. By using specific rhythms and frequencies, we can entrain our brainwaves to different states of consciousness, making it possible to down-shift our normal beta state (normal waking consciousness) to alpha (relaxed consciousness), and even reach theta (meditative state linked to creativity and intuition) and delta (deep sleep; where internal healing and cellular repair can occur).

The process of entrainment also supports organs and bodily systems in aligning with healing frequencies. Since every organ and cell naturally vibrates at a specific frequency, imbalance or illness can disrupt this harmony, causing the affected area to emit irregular or disharmonic vibrations. Sound therapy works by introducing stable, harmonic frequencies that gently guide the body back into balance. Instruments like tuning forks, singing bowls, and gongs produce steady vibrations that encourage organs to shift from a state of distress or disharmony into greater coherence, promoting relaxation, energetic alignment, and overall well-being.

When receiving sound healing, you are also invited into a place of stillness where you can participate by becoming more open and aware of each sound that comes in - deeply, mindfully listening. For those who struggle with silent meditation due to their busy minds, this can be a true reprieve from the mind. But sound not only helps with inducing relaxation and restoration, it also has a way of moving through areas of blockage.

Energetic blockages might be located in our physical bodies, our subtle bodies, or both. The physical body is where we experience localised pain/discomfort and the subtle body, where our life force energy exists, can hold imbalances and traumas long before they manifest in our physical bodies. Through the intentional application of different sound frequencies using various tools (e.g. tuning forks), blocked energy can be released, helping to rebalance and restore the energetic filtration system of each chakra, so that the stuck energy can be recycled back into our life force.

The video below showcases cymatic patterns generated by a singing bowl. Cymatics, the study of visible sound vibrations, reveals how sound takes shape in physical matter. As sound waves travel through mediums like water, sand, or metal plates, they form intricate geometric patterns that reflect the underlying frequency. Since the human body consists largely of water and other responsive materials, these sound frequencies influence us in similar ways, shaping our physical and energetic state.

INSTRUMENTS

My growing collection of tools includes over a dozen Himalayan singing bowls of various shapes and sizes (mostly sourced from Nepal and India), which produce a wide range of sounds and frequencies. Some of the singing bowls are antique and some are professionally made (Peter Hess®) for body massage therapy. I also own a set of seven chakra attuned crystal bowls (432Hz).

In addition to the bowls, I use tuning forks in my 1-to-1 sessions, which are played around the body and on the body. â€‹Tuning forks emit precise frequencies that target specific areas of the body or energy field, aiding in chakra alignment, acupressure stimulation, and therapeutic healing with focused vibrational effects. Meanwhile, the bowls create resonant, harmonic vibrations that promote deep relaxation, meditation, and energetic balancing by immersing the listener in rich, layered tones. Unlike tuning forks, they generate continuous sound waves rather than precise frequencies.

Additionally, I have a few more instruments which I may sometimes bring in to a session or include in a sound bath, such as the gong, Koshi wind chimes, a handmade shamanic drum, an ocean drum, rattles, seed shakers, bells, and my voice.

Core Principles of Sound Therapy

  • Resonance and frequency - Each organ has an optimal vibrational frequency. When exposed to sound waves that match or complement these frequencies, the organ can "tune" itself back into balance by matching these vibrations, which is important when imbalance and disease are present in the body and re-occurring.

  • Brainwave entrainment - The brain naturally aligns with external rhythms, shifting into states like heightened focus (beta waves) to deep relaxation (theta waves).

  • Vibrational healing - Sound waves penetrate tissues, encouraging circulation and cellular repair.

  • Binaural beats - Listening to slightly different frequencies in each ear can promote deep relaxation and mental clarity.

  • Chakra and energy alignment – Specific tones and vibrations target blocked chakras, promoting energetic balance.

Benefits of Sound Therapy

  • Reduces stress and anxiety

  • Helps to regulate and calm the nervous system (helping the body transition from a stressed state to a parasympathetic "rest-and-repair" mode

  • Improves sleep

  • Rebalances energy

  • Grounding

  • Helps clear energetic blockages

  • Encourages emotional release

  • Supports energetic detoxification and boots immune function

  • Supports cellular repair/regeneration

  • Enhances focus and concentration (through meditative, deep listening)

  • Enhances creativity

  • Strengthens mind-body connection

  • Boots emotional well-being

  • Promotes spiritual well-being

  • Induces altered states of consciousness (frequently reported)

Contraindications

Sound therapy is generally safe, but there are certain conditions where caution or avoidance is recommended. Here are some common contraindications:

  • Pregnancy (first trimester)

  • Heart conditions or pacemakers

  • Metal implants

  • Epilepsy
